Tesco Digital launches Film and TV downloads

November 12, 2008

  • Sony Pictures Television International (SPTI) offers a range of popular titles including Spider-Man 3, Open Season and Superbad
  • Warner Bros. offers the latest films as well as TV series such as Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles a day after they’ve aired on TV

From today consumers will be able to buy downloadable TV and film content to own from Tesco Digital (URL www.tesco.com/digital <blocked::http://www.tesco.com/digital>)

The initial beta version offering cements Tesco Digital as a one-stop shop for Tesco customer’s digital entertainment needs.

The new content complements the existing comprehensive music range, the majority of which is now compatible with both iPods and MP3 players. The online retailer’s plans are on course for all music on the site to be in MP3 format by the end of the year.

Graham Harris, Commercial Director at Tesco comments: "We said back in April when we launched our site that our aim for the new Tesco Digital site was for it to be more than just a music download portal - we wanted to create an exciting and easy-to-use entertainment shop that Tesco customers of all technical ability can use and trust. This next development confirms we are doing just that."

Customers will be able to "Download to Own" episodic TV and film from a cost of £1.87 for a TV episode, £6.97 for a back catalogue film and £10.97 for new release film. In the coming months Tesco Digital will also offer customers the ability to "Download to Rent" films.

Sony Pictures Television International (SPTI) and Warner Bros are Tesco Digital’s launch partners and will provide the introductory TV and film offering on the site, with Technicolor hosting and delivering the content through its new Prisma platform. The initial range of TV and film downloads will be added to in the coming weeks and months as further partners come on board.

Commenting, SPTI’s Danny Goldman, senior vice president, sales said: "SPTI’s goal is to provide U.K. consumers with great content - anywhere, anytime. Tesco has a proven track record in selling entertainment products to the British public and we look forward to working with them to extend this into digital distribution."

Josh Berger, President and MD of Warner Bros. Entertainment UK today said,

"The UK market has been one of the most dynamic in the world in the digital space. We look forward to partnering with Tesco in its mission to encourage its customers to embrace digital and are delighted that Tesco’s customers will now be able to watch the very best of Warner Bros entertainment, when and where they want it."

Chuck Parker, president of Technicolor’s Digital Content Delivery Business Division, said "Technicolor is committed to supporting our partners in creating business models with digital video content and this deployment of our Prisma platform in support of Tesco’s digital entertainment site is evidence of progress in our partnership with both our studio and retail customers."

Harris continues: "Offering film and TV is the next step in our exciting digital entertainment journey. We look forward to working with partners such as Sony Pictures Television International, Warner Bros. and Technicolor as we continue to build Tesco Digital’s online entertainment store."
